She/Her
Species: Ersatz Dragon
Age: 14 (During Prologue Chapters), 19 (After Prologue Chapters)
First Seen: Chapter 1, "The Thief and the Shepherd"
Belfry was a human girl from Vandermaine whose life was changed forever after a disastrous raid on a supposedly-abandoned temple led to her ingesting a strange gemstone of mysterious power that transformed her into an ersatz dragon. Belfry is very cynical and pragmatic, which she views as necessary traits to keep herself and the people she cares about alive. She gets nervous and flustered easily and feels fear very strongly whenever it rears its head. She has a good heart underneath her thorny exterior, and more than anything else longs to find a place she belongs.
She/Her
Species: Human
Age: 15 (During Prologue Chapters), 20 (After Prologue Chapters)
First Seen: Chapter 1, "The Thief and the Shepherd"
Grace is Belfry's adoptive sister, and was a bright spot in her life for years until their home town burned, and Grace left home to follow her dream. She subsisted on glorious, fantastical tales of knights and dragons in her youth, and has always wanted to become a knight herself, but was denied entry to the Dragoon Corps on her first attempt. She is relentlessly optimistic and views it as her responsibility to make the best of her choices and always lend others her aid when she can. While she isn't naïve, she has a bad habit of favouring risky options even when they aren't necessary.
He/Him
Species: Ersatz Dragon
Age: 19
First Seen: Chapter 9, "A Lead"
Arthur is a former human from the small hamlet Hath Church End on the Wildmoor. Though his family are common folk now, the Coslett family once had several famous knights and monster hunters in its ranks, and Arthur feels compelled to live up to their standards. Arthur is cheerful and oscillates between extreme recklessness when he's in familiar territory that he feels like he can control, and reserved nervousness when he is treading unfamiliar ground. He has a strong friendship with Rosalie Lecerf.
She/Her
Species: Human
Age: 23
First Seen: Chapter 9, "A Lead"
Rosalie is a human of the petty noble House Lecerf. She is the fourth of five children, putting her far from the line of succession and distancing her from her family's business, which she tries not to discuss as much as possible. She's very level-headed, and quite experienced for her background, having done a lot of travelling as she reached adulthood. She's quick to assign herself the role of mediator for conflicts. She has a deep friendship with Arthur Coslett.
They/Them
Species: Ersatz Dragon
Age: 21
First Seen: Chapter 14, "The Offer"
Griffin is a nonbinary former human who was first met at the Caspian Flight Academy. They were one of the two ersatz encountered by the Dragoon Corps before Belfry and Arthur arrived, and of the two, they were the only one interested in joining the Corps. They are shy and a little awkward in their speech, but they seem to enjoy being an ersatz dragon far more than Belfry or Arthur do. Despite their shyness, they have a lot of confidence when it comes to their areas of expertise.
He/Him
Species: Human
Age: 26
First Seen: Chapter 14, "The Offer"
Ingo is a human of Clan Helmont, a mercenary clan from the province of Grabsheim in the south of Esparc. He is gruff and standoffish, and he has been described as "mean" by his partner Griffin. However, he is intent on seeing his team succeed, no matter what that takes. He has been cagey about his history, and isn't interested in dwelling on the past. He suffers from severe visual impairments that render him blind most of the time.

Yura is an older gentleman compared to most of Ninth Flight. He is a foreigner to the province of Rimewater Vale, having come from the Kiiro Islands far to the south. While he has yet to speak much about his past, he has proved to be quite level-headed and adept at all the skills necessary to be a dragoon. Yura is disabled, missing his right arm.
She/Her
Species: True Dragon
Age: 20
First Seen: Chapter 15, "Ninth Flight"
Brand is a rust-scaled true dragon, and the draconic partner of Yura. As a true dragon, she is incapable of speaking directly to anyone who doesn't understand the Valish Draconic language, and is therefore required to use her partner as a translator. She isn't terribly interested in talking in the first place, though, and seems to have some discomfort with the entire prospect of being a dragoon, preferring to keep to herself and read rather than struggle to train basic skills she is lacking in.
Brian Lawcrest (He/Him)
A shepherd from Vandermaine, the father of Grace and adoptive father of Belfry. He lived a simple life after the sudden disappearance of his wife, practising simple but potent acts of kindness, taking care of his sheep, and remaining loyal to the Lundenian Empire. He was killed while searching for his daughters during the Veskite invasion of Vandermaine.
